Father's Day 2013

Sometimes, you fall in love a little bit more with someone while taking photos of them.

heading into Father's Day weekend

I wanted to start this weekend by thanking Rich for his mad fatherhood skills. This morning we were chatting about what he wanted to do this weekend. His answers "take the kids to the farmer's market, take the kids to the Discover Center, eat as a family on the patio." All of this while he was letting Alice sleep on his chest.

Many nights when I'm working late, traveling across the country or carving out time to take care of myself (gym, friend stuff, quiet time), Rich is home with two wild kids. Maybe teaching Charlie how to properly spray someone with a garden hose.

When you meet someone at 15 years old, you really have no idea what kind of father he will be. When you are dating in college, you still have no sense of it. Even after you've been married a few years, you think you know but you really don't. It's not until he comes home from your son's preschool event proudly wearing his Very Special Daddy Tie that you know. You really know.

Thank you, Rich. Our kids are lucky.

I have this post saved in my drafts . . .

It's all about how much Alice cries. And screams and cries. I started writing it when she was about 14 months old and just couldn't find the right words to share my frustration without seeming bitter, evil and earning Worst Mother of the Year award.

So it stays in my drafts and maybe when I'm able to massage the words, I'll share it. But it will be a postscript. Because most of the screaming and crying has eased up.

These days, she's very quiet. Because she's usually run off to another part of the house and is up to no good.

Party of 5

My friend Ann, whom I've worked with for 10 years (who can say that?!), invited me to take photos of her family again this past weekend.

Her youngest, Claire, and her twins, Megan and Colin, have birthdays very close together. Claire celebrated her first birthday and the twins their second.

I just love these people. Past photos here.

siblings

I don't talk to my brothers every day but we talk exactly enough. Sometimes just to gossip and catch up, other times to vent or for advice.

I've written before how important my siblings, those by blood and those by marriage, are to me. They are my support system. My nearest and dearest. Usually my first and last phone calls of the day.

Charlie and Alice seem to be starting off on the right path toward the same relationship. In these photos, Alice was frustrated and crying because she couldn't go out back. Charlie walked over, kissed her on the head, told her it would be ok and brought some of his toys over to distract her. He kept saying, "it'll be ok, Alice."

Scenes like this have me tapping Rich on the shoulder and saying "See, this is why we had 2. This is why."

May life in photos

May 2013.

The view when I'm almost home.
L.A. baby

My Dad usually FaceTimes us every night. On this particular night, I was chopping up fruit to make my infused water. So he decided to go into the kitchen and get a piece of coffee cake to one-up me.

Alice chases this ball around the house, crawls over and picks it up with her mouth. Rich told our dog that if Alice learns to bark, the dog's outta here.
if she learns to bark . . .

Rich captioned this photo "Look! I'm the Nirvana baby!"
