singing in the rain

Earlier this week we had some hard rain. So hard you could hear it hitting the roof, prompting Charlie to ask "what's that?" Rain, we told him. It only happens once in a while like this.

And so we puddle jumped. And found sticks. And smelled some flowers.

growing

Charlie is 99% potty trained. Which I'm grateful for, I am. But it's a reminder that the baby-ness, his needs, are growing.

He's a little boy. A little boy with his own personality, his own opinions, interests, emotions. My little man.

Michigan in March: Phees

The main reason we trekked home this month was so Rich could run his first 5k with his Dad.

Robin and I joined along (running/walking) but Rich killed it. I'm so proud of him.

The Phee's home was our usual Cousin Summit - but with two new additions this time.

Robin's son, Will, was born in October, just before Alice.

The big cousins spent a lot of time playing on their iPads, running around outside and helping build bonfires.

The guys stayed busy.

It was a wonderful time with bonfires, the requisite trip to El Burrito and lots of kid-bathing.

Thanks, Phees, for hosting and Robin's family for driving up from Chicago!

Michigan in March: Cunninghams

Just before my return to work, we returned as a family to Michigan so our friends and family could meet baby Alice. (And so Rich could run a 5k with his Dad.)

I was nervous about traveling with two kids and pushing this close so trip to my return-to-work date. But it ended up being one of our best MI trips.

There was no shortage of family to entertain Charlie.

One of the nights, my Dad hosted an open house at his home so our family and friends could meet the baby and check up on Charlie. We haven't had this many people over to the house since my Mom passed away. And it felt good, really good.

Lots of warmth and laughter and catching up going on. Right in her living room.

A good friend of our family, Paul Knowlson, brought his latest toy.

Which was pretty exciting for Charlie.

Hanging out on my Dad's bed with my siblings in our pjs, chatting and teasing my Dad. Chocolate milk at the kitchen table in the morning. Dinner at Pints & Quarts. Good stuff.

Thank you, Cunninghams.

photos by Charlie

Sometimes I'm brave . . . meaning I let Charlie snap photos with my baby camera.

On our recent trip to Michigan, I let him take some photos at the family gathering we had at my Dad's house.

Enjoy.

I think I need to get him his own camera.

San Diego zoo

I know I've already posted about our trip to the zoo with my brother's family, but Misty shared the gorgeous photos from her camera with me recently and decided we need a Part 2.

All of these photos were taken by Misty.

Let me begin with how much I love these people. Truly.

And I feel really bad for Bryan that his sister is so weird.

And his nephew.

This gorgeous creature seemed to follow us around the zoo.

This gorgeous creature was getting tired but enjoying the exhibits.

And this creature . . . well, don't they seem so cute? So playful?

Well, they can be vicious, too. Look at those chompers.
